WTG Supreme Court! Oregon's Assisted Suicide Ruling Stands

This is so exciting. The Court voted 6 to 3 on this. The bad news is that new justice Roberts was in the 3 member minority.

Hopefully this is NOT a vision of things to come.

agreed, good news. i'm not crazy about assisted suicide, in fact voted against it because i thought it would turn into a nightmare, with people coming to oregon just to commit suicide with drugs, the elderly being forced into the procedure, the people who could not afford long-term care feeling obliged to do it, etc. in fact, none of that has come to pass. only 200 people have elected to do this in 8 years and they were overwhelmingly middle-income or higher, hospice care patients, white. so it's clear that this is a decision that each state can handle.
once again, we get evidence that the right is all for states' rights--except when it's not. one would think that their intellectual self-respect would demand some consistency on this matter, but i haven't seen it yet. on the other hand, i suppose you'd have to say that for purposes of this issue, the left is for federal jurisdiction over such matters--except where it's not.

I voted against it in CA because I wasn't sure the law provided enough safeguards. I'd vote for it if it comes around again as it surely will.

Oregon seems to have provided a template for CA to follow.
