NBC News discovered that last year a small group of activists meeting at a Quaker Meeting House in Florida to protest military recruiting at local high schools was considered a threat by the defense Department. It got logged as a "suspicious incident" (one of over 1,500 logged in 10 months).
Now who can blame them. After all, al-Zaqawi only wants to kill all Americans. Those Quakers want to stop the neo-cons. They had to be stopped!

this is the kind of corrosive thing that happened all the time during the Vietnam war. C.D.B. Bryan in Friendly Fire(a tv flick of l979 with carol burnett in a rare dramatic role)chronicles one family's loss of faith and trust in its government largely because of what that government did after their son died in Vietnam. First, the army told them he died of a fatal missle wound. when he came back with only a small pen-tip puncture wound in his back, it came out that actually, he died in a friendly fire incident in which US artillery failed to correct for the height of some trees nearby during DTs. That took months of effort to discover. When they put a protest ad with 714 crosses in the des moines register, and then sent the mother to one of the mass protests in Washington DC, low and behold, she came under surveillance by the fbi as a subversive. it's unbelievable that this would happen in a free society, even one torn by war.
i understand that everyone was spooked at the beginning of the post 9-11--i thought my traveling life was over, there would be multiple attacks, it was curtains for all of us. i can see this thing being authorized for a few months in that terrible period. but why has it continued after it has become clear that these people scored a rare and spectacular lucky hit? shouldn't we instead be having a national conversation about what risk level we can tolerate without having our basic rights so blatantly trampled underfoot?
these are really dumb questions because we are being led by someone whom god wanted in office. who is he to be trifled with by mere mortals like us?
