Some New Year Resolutions for 2006
That our President spends some time listening to all sides of an issue, not just those who agree with him.
That the Iraqis can take over their country and the US can leave - which will please Iraqis as well as Americans.
That somebody comes to their senses and Rumsfeld finds employment someplace where he can do no harm.
That no more businesses mess up their employees' pensions.
That the US agrees to the Kyoto Accord standards.
That the Patriot Act dies a well deserved death.
That the US government realize that it shouldn't be spying on its own citizens without warrants.
And going for the whole enchillada, I would hope that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld would realize how badly they've screwed everything up, resign en masse. Ok, well, maybe not that - because the field of people who would take over isn't much better.

and let's add some resolutions for the people who elected President Bush and who are therefore responsible for endorsing some of these unfortunate decisions:
let's us all resolve to never to CHOOSE war, or more to the point, allow our leadership to CHOOSE war. there are lots of reasons why we might have to use military force, but let's resolve not to CHOOSE war. i'm always reminded of the statesmen of l9l4, none of whom minded the idea of a splendid little war too much. They got a lot more than they bargained for in nine million dead, four empires collapsed and chaos loosed on the world.
President Bush CHOSE war in Iraq, causing thousands of deaths and threatening the stability of the region. Let's resolve not to allow him or any of his successors to do that again.
let's all resolve to show a renewed respect for FACTS. There are FACTS, such as the lack of WMDs found in Iraq, and then ALLEGATIONS, such as the purported link between Al-Qaeda and Saddam. Let's insist that allegations be verified with ACTUAL PROOF before we endorse and validate the person making them.
let's not be fooled again!
Let's all resolve to insist that our lawmakers prepare our citizens for a world that's changing with the speed of light. Let's pressure them to design a system of portable basic health care and portable pensions, so that the impact of job loss in an era of globalization will be alleviated and chances for independent initiative increased. Government can't do everything, but it has been quite good at providing a measure of security for people against life's big changes and vicissitudes.
Let's all resolve to live in the reality-based world where science is concerned. Let's all concede that we don't know for sure how the univere appeared, but that we have a pretty good idea what happened AFTER that based on SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATION.
Let's resolve to give a big middle finger and a hard kick in the behind to the warmongers, the greedy, the ignorant and intolerant among us. And then let's get to work to turn the country around and get it going in a positive direction.
